چکیده

It is demonstrated that the surface chemistry of simple-model extreme-pressure lubricant additives, measured in ultrahigh vacuum, corresponds to that measured at higher pressures, where film growth rates are monitored using a microbalance. This chemistry and reaction kinetics are used to explain the extreme-pressure lubrication behavior by successfully modeling the measured seizure load vs. additive concentration curves. It is also demonstrated, by growing ferrous chloride films on iron substrates in ultrahigh vacuum, that these have the same friction coefficients as those found for model extreme-pressure lubricants. It is found that a monolayer of a solid boundary lubricant film is sufficient to lower the interfacial friction coefficient to its minimum value. These results demonstrate that the chemistry measured under conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium at some temperature can be successfully applied to the formation of a boundary film, in the extreme-pressure regime. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The surface and tribological chemistry of chlorine- and sulfur- containing lubricant additives

A model for the operation of chlorinated hydrocarbon extreme-pressure additives is outlined in which the chlorinated hydrocarbon thermally decomposes at the hot (~1000 K) interface forming a chloride + carbon film, which is simultaneously worn from the surface. Assuming that seizure occurs when the chloride film thickness decreases to zero reproduces the experimentally measured seizure load vs....

Antiwear and Extreme Pressure Additives for Greases

Twenty-nine additives were evaluated for their antiwear and extreme pressure properties when incorporated in various percentages in lithium soap-mineral oil greases. The percentages of the principal antiwear and extreme pressure inducing elements: sulfur, chlorine, phosphorus and lead were determined. The most promising ones were further evaluated in commercialgreases and in inorganic thickened...

The investigation of different particle size magnesium-doped zinc oxide (Zn0.92Mg0.08O) nanoparticles on the lubrication behavior of paraffin oil

Magnesium-doped zinc oxide (Zn0.92Mg0.08O) (ZMO) nanoparticles of 23 nm particle size have been synthesized by auto-combustion method. The variation in particle size of these nanoparticles has been performed by their further calcination at 800 and 1000 C for 2 h and the corresponding calcined particles are designated as ZMO-1 and ZMO-2, respectively. The nanoparticles have been characterized by...
